To \Icreate a new topic\I, press <A> (to Add topic). A new line
will open at the end of the list of topics. Type in the description
(up to 50 characters long). You will be in EDIT MODE, so you may
use Editing Commands only. When you have finished typing the topic
description, press <ENTER> to enter it into the system. If you want
to now use it, press <ENTER> again to make it the Current Topic. It
will then be displayed in the top line of the Status Display.
Think of this description as a "title" for your work. It will help
you focus your thoughts and it will make it easier for you to find
information when you look at it later, by describing the kind of
thoughts that are in the session.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
If you want to use a previous topic, use the UP/DN arrow keys to
place the cursor (highlighted line) on your choice, and then press
<ENTER>. This Topic will now be displayed on the top line of the
Status Display.
The following is a summary of the commands and their use for the

\IT\Ihots Tag this Topic for merging Thot list ONLY.
\I<ESC>\I This will exit from TOPICS and return to FUNCTION MENU.
\IHELPFUL HINTS:\I
Sometimes you may want to make a copy of an existing Topic so that
you can try some alternative versions of your Outline. Here's an
easy way to do this:
1. Tag the Topic you want to copy <T> for list, <O> for outline.
2. Press <A> to add new Topic, type in new title, press <ENTER>
3. Now press <M> to merge--you now have a clone!

≡!6\IBRAINSTORM--SUMMARY OF COMMANDS\I
\IAdd\I ADD thot to list (resume Brainstorm from COMMAND MODE)
\IDelete\I Mark this thot for DELETION, actual deletion from F6
\IE\Idit Open this line up for EDITing, <ENTER> enters changes
\IH\Ielp Gets HELP relative to current Function. (How you got here)
\IS\Iave SAVEs your work to disk--do often!
\I<ESC>\I ESCAPES, exits, from BRAINSTORM and goes to FUNCTION MENU
(Press <PgDn> for more HELP, or <ESC> to continue)
\IBRAINSTORM--OVERVIEW AND DESCRIPTION\I
Brainstorming is a process which involves listing as many ideas or
thoughts about a topic that you can. This is an information
gathering process. All you have to do is list your thoughts, the
program will automatically number each \Ithot\I (we call them "thots"
\Iafter\I they are entered into the program) as it is entered.
Because the nature of this function is entering information, the EDIT
MODE is the most used activity. To access the COMMAND MODE, press
<ESC>, then you can access the few commands available to you here.
To return to input, press <A> (to Add a new thot).
If you are using a previous Topic, begin adding by starting with the
<A> command. This will put you at the end of the list.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\ICOMMAND DESCRIPTIONS:\I
When you are in the COMMAND MODE (entire line is in inverse-video),
the following commands are available to you:
\IA\Idd Add another thot to the list--leaves COMMAND MODE, enters
EDIT MODE and goes to end of the list.
\ID\Ielete ** THIS FEATURE MARKS, BUT DOES NOT DELETE AT THIS TIME **
Mark this thot for deletion. You must first place the
cursor on the thot you wish to have deleted, then press
<D>. This thot will now be preceded by three asterisks
(***) to let you know that it is marked for deletion. It
can't actually be deleted here. It is deleted in the
UTILITIES Function (F6). If you change your mind, you
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\IDelete (cont.)\I may remove this marking by again placing the cursor
on it and then pressing the <D>--the asterisks will
disappear. When a thot is marked for deletion, it can
be used in an Outline, but when it is deleted, all items
grouped under it in the Outline will be deleted from the
Outline (but not from the list).
\IE\Idit This shifts to the EDIT MODE for the line that the cursor
is on. Press <ENTER> to enter the change and switch back
to COMMAND MODE.
\IH\Ielp This command is what got you here!
\IS\Iave This saves your work to disk. It's a good idea to save
your work often to insure against data loss.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\I<ESC>\I Press <ESC> key to exit from BRAINSTORM and return to the
FUNCTION MENU.
\IHELPFUL HINTS:\I
If you need more help at any time, press <ESC> twice, and then press
<F1> for access to HELP and Overview Information.
** End of this Help, press <ESC> to return, or <Pg Up> to review **

\IARRANGE--OVERVIEW OF PURPOSE\I
This Function provides you with an over-lapping of the List Window
and the Outline Window. Once you have listed your ideas in the
BRAINSTORM Function, you now select the thots that you think are
beneficial for use in the Outline.
The List Window is on the left, and the Outline Window is on the
right. You will select thots from the List by using the UP/DN arrows
keys to put the cursor ON the thot you want; then you either press
the <ENTER> or <A> key. \INOTE:\I The <ENTER> shifts you into the
Arrange Window where you can then move the cursor to locate where you
want to \IA\IDD the thot. The ADD command in the List Window
\Iautomatically\I adds the thot, and leaves you in the List window.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
This selection process continues until you have placed enough thots
into the Arrange Window that you can toggle to it (with <ENTER>) and
begin arranging your outline with movement commands.
You can, if you want, advance to the OUTLINE Function (F5) at this
point. In that function you can add new thots by pressing <N> for
NEW (thot). If you do this, you can always return to this (F4)
function to pick any un-used thots from the list that you want.
For a more detailed explanation of the commands, press <PgDn>. At
the end of the Command Descriptions there are some helpful hints and
shortcuts.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\ICOMMAND DESCRIPTIONS:\I
\IA\Idd (List/Left Window) Automatically ADD this to Right Window
(Arrange/Right Window) ADD current thot after this one
(press <Pg Dn> for more)
\IT\Iag You must TAG thots before you may Copy, Move, or Delete
If you TAG a thot in the Arrange (right) Window, any thots
subordinate to it in the outline will also be tagged. All
tagged thots will be highlighted.
\IC\Iopy Put cursor on thot above where you want to make a COPY of
the tagged thot and press <C>.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\ID\Ielete After tagging, DELETE all tagged thots. If you change your
mind, you may press <U> to \IU\Indo before you hit any other key!
\IM\Iove Put cursor on thot above where you want to MOVE tagged thot
and press <M>. Thot(s) will be moved, and Outline up-dated.
\IH\Ielp That's how you got here. Welcome!
\II\Insert Place cursor on line below where you want the Current Thot
added. (This is like ADD, but brings the thot in above
instead of below the line.)
\IU\Indo This will Undo a delete, as long as it is the next key
pressed (see Delete command above).
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
\IARRANGE--HELPFUL INFORMATION:\I
If you have a fairly long or complex outline, you may use the (1-5)
keys while in the Arrange (right) Window. By pressing this number,
the Outline will collapse to the level corresponding to the number
you pressed. You can use the "Home" and "End" keys to help. Place
the cursor ON the thot you wish to work with and press <V> to restore
the VIEW. The Outline will expand, leaving the cursor on the thot
it was on, and this will be on the fourth line down in the window.
You must restore the View (<V> key) before you can continue moving
or adding thots.

\IOUTLINE--OVERVIEW OF PURPOSE\I
If you enter this function directly from TOPICS you will find a blank
workspace waiting for you, and you will be in the EDIT MODE. You can
type your thoughts, just as in BRAINSTORM. Then you can exit editing
by pressing <ESC> and you can use the movement commands to arrange
your thots. You may switch back and forth (using <N> and <ESC>) as
much as you like.
If you followed the BRAINSTORM/ARRANGE process, the contents of the
Arrange Window will be displayed here. The advantage of this screen
is the larger work space to see your work, and the ability to add NEW
thots directly to places in the Outline. (By the way, NEW thots are
automatically added to the Thot List for you.) All of the commands
used in the Arrange Window work here as well.

< \I You are now at the FUNCTION MENU\I
THOT-PLAN'r uses eight Functions, or Functional Areas. Each one is
dedicated to a certain activity. Wherever you are in this program,
you can get to this menu by pressing the <Esc> key twice. There are
three ways to choose activities from this menu.
1) You may select items by pressing the number key (along the top
of the keyboard) that corresponds to the Function you want; or...
2) You may use cursor movement (Up & Dn Arrows) to place the cursor
on the Function, and then press <RETURN>; or...
3) You may select the Function by pressing the Function Key with
the number shown in the menu (e.g., F1 for HELP, F2 for Topics).
For additional, general help or an overview, select HELP (item 1).
\ITo exit this--and all other Helps--press <Esc>.\I
≥▓+ \IOVERVIEW of THOT-PLAN'r\I
Welcome! THOT-PLAN'r is a software tool for Brainstorming and
Outlining that you can use to capture your thoughts, and then put
them into a plan, or outline. Your flow through the program will
generally follow the sequence of the FUNCTIONS--in the order that
they are presented in the FUNCTION MENU. \I This menu is never more
than two keystrokes away (press <ESC> twice).\I
There are eight (8) Functions. Each may be reached through the
FUNCTION MENU, or by pressing its corresponding Function Key.
You'll know you're in the COMMAND MODE if the Cursor is in inverse-
video (a lighted bar across a line). If the cursor is a blinking-
underscore, you are in EDIT MODE.
(Press <PgDn> for more Help, or <ESC> to exit to Menu)
To go from EDIT MODE to COMMAND MODE, press the <ESC> key.
While in the COMMAND MODE, THOT-PLAN'r uses "mneumonic", or "alpha"
commands to move your thoughts around. That is, the key used to
execute a command relates to the \Ifirst letter\I of the command word
(eg. <H> key for Help, <E> key for Edit, etc.). When you press these
letters, it doesn't matter if they are "shifted" (capitalized) or
not--just press the key that shows that letter. A detailed
description of each command can be found in the COMMAND DESCRIPTION
section of each Function's Help.
Each Function has Help availble that is specific to it. This Help is
organized in the following manner. When you press <H> while in the
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
COMMAND MODE, a new box (like the one this text is in) opens up. The
information here is much greater than the box can display, so you
"scroll" through it with the <Pg Up> and <PgDn> keys, just as you are
doing here. The first display is a Summary of Commands for that
Function. This will give you a brief description of what that
command word stands for.
Pressing the <?> key replaces the Status Display with a list of the
command words, but doesn't tell you what they mean. The summary in
HELP will give a brief description of each command. A more complete
explanation is given further down in the COMMAND DESCRIPTION section.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
Between the SUMMARY OF COMMANDS and the COMMAND DESCRIPTION sections
is a brief OVERVIEW of the Function which describes its purpose and
the nature of activities that take place there.
After the COMMAND DESCRIPTION section, there is a section which will
give you helpful hints and shortcuts.
THOT-PLAN'r uses \Iwindowing technology\I to give you the structure
necessary to accomplish your Brainstorming, Listing, and Outlining
tasks quickly and efficiently. These "windows" are framed boxes
which contain either information, or a work-space, for you. The
window across the top of this screen is referred to as the "Status
Display". The small box in the upper-left corner of this window
will always show you what Function you are currently in.
( <PgUp>, <PgDn>, or <ESC> )
The horizontal box to the right of it will show you the topic,
unless it is still undefined. The box below these contains a
"message line" for various messages and helpful information.
Start by selecting or creating a Topic (F2). Once you have this
topic, it will remain the topic until you either select a new one,
or exit the program. The label you give this topic will be
displayed on the top line of the Status Display.
When you have the Topic selected you may then perform any of the
other functions. You may wish to modify the Outline indices before
going any further. If this is the case, go to UTILITIES by either
returning to the FUNCTION MENU (press <ESC>) for selection, or you
can go directly there by pressing <F6>.
** End of this Help, press <ESC> to return, or <Pg Up> to review **

£=ƒä \ITHOT-PLAN'r LICENSING INFORMATION\I
Thank you for your interest! If you find this as useful as we think
you will, send a check, or money order, payable to THOTSystems. This
will register you as a Licensed User, and make you a "Founding
Customer". To do this, please send your: Name, Address (ZIP), Phone
(Area Code), check/money order, and the \II.D. number\I for this copy
(the one at the bottom of the Function Menu screen) to:
THOTSystems, Inc.
P.O. Box 1508

products which, when combined, create a unique "Idea Processing
System". We will send you advance information about our coming
products. THOT-Writer<tm> (Summer 1985) adds the ability to assign
text to the points in the outline. It will have a simple-to-use
text editor and the ability to re-arrange text by changing the
outline. THOT-Finder<tm> adds a database capability for finding text
with relationships and keywords--imagine, a creative-idea data base!
2) We will give you credit for the full amount that you send us for
this program when ordering another product, e.g. if you send $30.00
now, we'll credit you for that amount on a future product.

Organizations may apply. This could be a great "passive" fund-
raiser. Once you "share it around", we do the rest!
The Distributor's License will allow you to make a commission on
every paid licensee that registers with your I.D. number. You must
have a User's License to request information about this. \IAsk for a
